Should we drink more water?

This is a question that has been debated amongst varied groups of professionals, those in the medical profession versus the health industry. If you conduct an online search about drinking more water, you will encounter a considerable amount of data on the subject. Isn’t that the reason why you are reading this article?

Each day when we walk down any street, we see people who are overweight and they are jeopardizing their future health.  What they do today is going to impact on what happens tomorrow. Therefore if people are eating too much from the wrong food groups, and jeopardizing their future health and longevity. We could ask if they are doing the same with their choice of fluid intake. We all know the answer is yes?

This article isn’t going to discuss the amount of water we should ingest each day or whether it should be bottled, filtered or tap water. Or whether you should be drinking out of metal water bottles or plastic. It’s all about being more conscious of what sorts of fluids we are pumping into our bodies on day to day bases.

Every day we have a choice of what we are going to drink to keep ourselves hydrated.Drink more water

  • Herbal tea
  • Mineral water
  • Soda water
  • Soda/soft drinks ( depending on your geographical location)
  • Beer
  • Wine
  • Cordials
  • Fruit juice
  • Water

This list is by no means exhaustive each of these liquids could be broken down into sub categories. On a daily bases we have an avalanche of fluids to choose from to hydrate our bodies, all these fluids contribute to hydrating our bodies. Which do you choose?

Case study – Working in a corporate environment -Is this you?

First up in the morning grab a coffee or tea and rush off to work. If you didn’t have time you may be drinking it in the car or perhaps get one on the way to work from your favorite cafe. Probably reach for another drink before you start work.
If you are fortunate to have a break in your work place you may have ‘morning break’ with another beverage a juice or perhaps some cold water from the office cooler. Lunchtime rolls around, a quick sandwich and a drink maybe another caffeine based drink or a bottle of water. The afternoon is hard going and the work load is ever pressing, you need those afternoon coffee fixes to keep you going.
Day ends you head home or go to your preferred restaurant or takeout. What sort of liquids are we looking at here? Anything from soda to wine, beer and just might finish off with a caffeine based drink.

Looking back over your busy day you may have consumed up to 5 or 6 cups of coffee, wine, soda but little water. And this could be your daily routine for years. What could be the consequences of drinking little water? Is that how you should treat your body?
Let’s face it every one of us can easily fall into the trap of getting caught up in day to day life and not give enough thought or attention to what fluids we are putting into our bodies.

The time has come to drink more water!
